special news feature Dedication of Houghton Portrait to the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) On Tuesday evening, 9 October 1990, a portrait of the late Professor Henry G. Houghton will be presented to UCAR during the annual meeting of the corporation. Houghton is recognized as founder of UCAR, and is renowned as a scientist for his fundamental research in cloud physics. He was recognized as an educator who influenced the standards for meteorological education in the early 1940s, and as an effective teacher and administrator, as was demonstrated by his success as a professor and head of the Department of Meteorology at MIT, 1945-70. (See BAMS, Vol. 70, No. 4, pp. 403-406.) The AMS, in recognition of Houghton's central role in restructuring and expanding the AMS following World War II, invited friends and admirers of Houghton to underwrite the commissioning of a portrait by Cambridge artist Melvin Robbins. The artist and some members of the Houghton family are expected to attend the unveiling at UCAR. Contributors and friends of Henry Houghton are cordially invited to attend the ceremony.
