Macelwane Annual Awards were established by the American Meteorological Society to honor the late Rev. James B. Macelwane, S.J., a world-renowned authority of seismology, who was a geophysicist and Dean of the Institute of Technology, Saint Louis University, until his death in 1956. The purpose of these awards is to stimulate interest in meteorology among college students. The awards are granted to students who have written original papers concerned with some phase of the atmospheric sciences. The papers are reviewed by the AMS Committee of Judges for Undergraduate Awards. Award stipends are supported by the Weather Corporation of America, private meteorological consultants, Saint Louis Missouri. The author of the first-place paper receives $300; of the second-place paper, $200; and of the third-place paper, $100.
