Authors' Guide Third Edition FOREWORD The purpose of this publication is to provide instructions and guidelines that will assist authors, editors, and reviewers in preparing material for publication by the American Meteorological Society. The style guidelines presented here apply to all AMS publications and should be followed by authors preparing a scientific research paper for a journal, monograph, or book; a chapter of a book; or a full-length book or monograph. At present the AMS handles well over 1100 scientific papers per year. It is a tremendous jo b to see these papers through the editorial and printing processes. Compliance with the guidelines and instructions presented here will help to produce better-written and more accurate publications in a more timely manner. Electronic publication is flourishing in a variety of forms throughout science, and the AMS has increased its presence in areas of electronic publishing markedly in the last few years. The AMS has accepted authors' manuscripts on diskette for nearly a decade, and this guide contains information for authors related to submission on diskette. This avenue of electronic submission has not lead to a significant decrease in the expenses associated with publishing the journals and has never been pursued
