The oxidative burst is correlated with the HR in a number of plant-pathogen interactions and therefore may be an important element contributing to disease resistance. This review first describes the occurrence of the oxidative burst in severa1 plant-pathogen interactions. Second, recent progress toward understanding the regulation and properties of the molecular components involved in the generation of AOS is highlighted. Third, possible functions of AOS that may contribute to disease resistance are dscussed. The reader is also referred to an excellent past review on this subject (Sutherland, 1991).
