Jusko 1 Clinical Pharmacokinetics Laboratory, Departments of Pharmacy, Medicine, and Pharmaceutics, State University of New York at Buffalo and Millard Fillmore Hospital, Buffalo, New York 14209 ABSTRACT The pharmacokinetics of gentamicin, kanamycin, and creatinine were studied in patients undergoing hemodialysis. After intravenous injection of single doses of the drugs, 50 to 60% of the doses of both antibiotics were cleared from the body during a 6-h period; this occurred almost entirely by the hemodialysis process. No correlation was found between the dialysance of the aminoglycosides and creatinine. The pharmacokinetic data were used to make dosage regimen recommendations for treatment of hemodialysis patients with these antibiotics.
