THE ELECTROPHORETIC VELOCITY OF BACTERIA IN RELATION TO GROWTH, SENESCENCE, AND DEATH Department of Bacteriology and Immunology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Downloaded from http://jb.asm.org/ on December 10, 2011 by deepdyve Received for publication, June 14, 1935 Among the factors which are said to influence the electrophoretic velocity of bacteria is that of the age of the bacteria investigated. However, no definite and designed study has been made of this problem in order to determine to what extent the surface potential difference (P.D.) of bacteria, as measured by their electrophoretic velocity, is influenced by their age. There are a few isolated observations and data in the literature, but these have been made or gathered incidentally in the course of some other study, and are either too limited or too variable and conflicting to be of much service in giving a clear conception of the relationship, if one exists. Shibley (1924) seems to be the only investigator who has submitted tenable data on the relationship of P.D.
