Letter to the editor: "when does a human life begin? TO THE EDITOR: Dr. Knutson asks, "When Does a Human Life Begin?"' and has developed some very interesting data regarding the v-arious answers held by a number of public health professionals. For quite a few years I have been studying this and related questions as a part of my effort to discover the cause of aging. These studies have led me to conclude that the simplest way to approach this question is by first asking and answering the complementary question, "When does human death occur?" APRIL. 1 966 My first effort to answer this question led me to conclude that human beings can and do die two separate and clearly distinguishable deaths.2 The first of these I called organismal death, which is the result of physiological disorganization. Prompt resuscitation has often reversed this kind of death and restored these individuals to a complete state of health. The second kind of death identified was the result of disorganization of the vital nerve cells of the vegetative brain. Permanent disorganization of these cells occurs after a very few minutes of anoxia.
