DANGEROUS PROPERTIES OF INDUSTRIAL MATERIALS

DANGEROUS PROPERTIES OF INDUSTRIAL MATERIALS DANGEROUS PROPERTIES OF INDUSTRIAL MATERIALS (2nd ed.)-By N. Irving Sax. New York, N. Y.: Reinhold, 1963. 1343 pp. Price, $25. hazards of chemicals employed in industry. The second edition lists some 10,000 compounds with necessarily brief listing of synonyms, description, physical constants, estimates of hazards, and measures recommended to control the hazards in the plant and in shipment. As in the earlier edition, the first third of the book is devoted to the basic principles of toxicology, ventilation control, air pollution, radiation protection, and industrial fire protection. The chapter on shipping regulations has been redone to include the 1960 revisions in Federal law and regulation. A new chapter on food additives has been written by Morris Jacobs. The value of some of these chapters would be enhanced by the inclusion of appropriate references. Individual chemicals are listed by their chemical or common names. Trade names are not included nor are compounds containing mixtures of chemicals. Because of these omissions, the volume is of more value to those handling labeled chemicals than it is to those called upon to treat poisonings where the exact composition of the offending agents may be in doubt. Within the space available, the authors have covered an unusual range of information which should continue to be useful to those handling chemicals in the course of their daily employment. HAROLD J.
