PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES OF SEXUAL INEQUALITY

PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES OF SEXUAL INEQUALITY It is suggested that psychiatric theory is too limiting in its application to women's present situation; therapists have an obligation to understand that womens condition of social and sexual inequality is real and that the striving for liberation is valid, though fraught with conflict. The social and psychological meaning of conflict is explored, and it is concluded that the values are positive provided the conflict is exposed and examined in the therapeutic situation (or wherever it occurs). In this way, the goal is clarified and alternative means sought for an open and mutual struggle for equality. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png American Journal of Orthopsychiatry American Psychological Association

Abstract

It is suggested that psychiatric theory is too limiting in its application to women's present situation; therapists have an obligation to understand that womens condition of social and sexual inequality is real and that the striving for liberation is valid, though fraught with conflict. The social and psychological meaning of conflict is explored, and it is concluded that the values are positive provided the conflict is exposed and examined in the therapeutic situation (or wherever it occurs). In this way, the goal is clarified and alternative means sought for an open and mutual struggle for equality.
