This chapter looks at various approaches to nervous mechanisms in learning, then reviews the chief current theories of the mechanism of learning to determine in how far they are consistent with the facts revealed by experimental studies. To do this the following topics are examined: the origin of behavior during growth, development of learning capacity in the evolutionary series, learning in relation to neural structure, general characteristics of the organization of habits, the nature of central integration deduced from the defects following injuries to the nervous system, the phenomena of learning, and theories of the mechanism of learning.
