Abstract

The origin of the discontinuity and the transition from the set of lower to upper curves in an E I / E 2 versus E / E 2 plot for the ground state bands of even-even nuclei revealed by the variable-moment-of-inertia model is traced to the proton-neutron interaction. In particular, the upper set is shown to appear for a system consisting of two types of fermions, protons, and neutrons, only from a threshold value of the proton-neutron interaction on.
