Structure in the C 12 + C 12 and Be 8 + O 16 fission width distribution of Mg 24 observed via the... Prominent gross and intermediate width structures are observed in the C 12 + C 12 , C 12 + C 12 *( 2 + ), C 12 *( 2 + )+ C 12 *( 2 + ), Be 8 + O 16 , and Be 8 + O 16 * ( 3 - , 0 + ) decay channels following Mg 24 * population via the C 12 ( O 16 , α ) Mg 24 reaction at E c . m . = 33 MeV. Evidence that the C 12 ( O 16 , α ) Mg 24 reaction populates states in Mg 24 which are associated with C 12 + C 12 resonances is presented in the form of correlation analyses between the α + C 12 + C 12 three-body spectra and previously measured C 12 + C 12 elastic and inelastic excitation functions. Direct determination of C 12 + C 12 widths from these measurements is obscured by a background of other strong transitions which appear to be present in the C 12 ( O 16 , α ) Mg 24 singles spectrum. NUCLEAR REACTIONS C 12 ( O 16 , α ) Mg * 24 → X + Y ; measured σ ( α X Y ) three body coincidence, fission widths of states in Mg 24 between E x = 20 and 40 MeV.
