Properties of π N ( 980 )

Properties of π N ( 980 ) Results are presented on the properties of π N ( 980 ) , produced peripherally in the reaction K - + p → Y 1 * + ( 1385 ) + π N - ( 980 ) with a cross section of 9±3 μb at 5.5 GeV c . A search was made for π N ( 980 ) production via the decay of a higher-mass resonance. The cross section for the reaction K - + p → Λ + D 0 ( 1285 ) at 5.5 GeV c , with the subsequent decay D 0 → π N ( 980 ) + π , was <6 μb at the 70% confidence level. The mass and width of the π N ( 980 ) are 980±10 and 80±30 MeV, respectively. The dominant decay mode is π η , with the decay angular distribution having about a 10% probability of being isotropic. At the 70% confidence level, the branching ratio into π ρ relative to π η is <0.25, and the amount of any K - K 0 enhancement near 1 GeV, normalized to the π - η signal from π N - ( 980 ) decay, is <0.2. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Physical Review D American Physical Society (APS)
