Multiple-scattering analysis of the π - He system at high energies

Elastic scattering of negative pions by He 4 nuclei at 1.12 GeV is analyzed using the multiple scattering theory. The contribution of the higher order optical potentials is found to be large in the region of the second diffraction maximum; it comes mainly from the center of mass pair correlations enhanced by a large relativistic kinematic correction. The effects of the dynamical correlation, the fixed scatterer approximation as a result of the closure, and the off-shell property of the π N amplitude are found to be negligible. The calculated cross section is in fair agreement with the experiment for q 2 ≲ 0.4 ( G e V / c ) 2 .
