The strange quark in most applications can be considered as light and, consequently, one-gluon exchange effects in hadrons containing strange quarks are small. We point out, however, that they are crucial even for a qualitative understanding of certain phenomena. In particular, the recently measured surprisingly large hyperfine splitting in D s can be attributed to this effect.
