Cosmic-Ray Meson Spectra D. M. BosE, BIBHA CHOUDHURI, AND M. SINHA* Bose Institute, Calcutta, India (Received April 22, 1944) IN a recent paper1 (denoted hereafter as I), Hamilton, Heitler, and Peng have proposed a comprehensive theory of the origin of cosmic-ray mesons, which appears to provide at least a qualitative interpretation of a large number of observations on cosmic-ray penetrating particles. These authors aim at giving a connected account of cosmic-ray and nuclear phenopnena, and have selected that form of the meson theory which gives the best account of nuclear forces, viz., that proposed by Moller and Rosenfeld.2 According to Heitler et a.,3 the meson field of a fast proton of energy E>>»c2 when scattered in the field of a stationary nucleon, radiates an amount of meson energy eC5E. We take the meson mass energy ,uc2 to be 101 ev. The released energy e may (1) result in a single meson of energy e which in the process of being scattered in the field of the stationary nucleon gives rise to a single or a multiple of n rmesons. TIhe cross section enr for each multiplicity n has a maximum at some energy E, which in- creases with n.
