A narrow, strongly excited state was observed in the B 11 ( α , p ) C 14 reaction at 23.288 MeV. This excitation energy is in agreement with peaks seen in C 13 ( p , π + ) C 14 and C 14 ( e , e ′ ) C 14 reactions. However, the ( p , π + ) work indicates that this state may be a 3 - , T = 2 state. The population of this level via the ( α , p ) reaction rules this out. Furthermore, weak coupling calculations suggest that the centroid of the | B ⊗ ν 11 ( p 1 2 , d 5 2 ) , π ( d 5 2 ) 〉 configuration lies very close to this energy. It is therefore more probable that this state has a spin and parity of 7 + , T = 1 rather than a 3 - , T = 2 assignment.
