Located on the summit of Mt. Washington, with administrative headquarters in North Conway, New Hampshire, the Observatory's principal purpose is continuous observation and reporting of the weather from the summit. It also conducts weather and related natural science research, provides comprehensive education programs, and operates a high-quality museum and library devoted to the history, art, and culture of the Mt. Washington and the White Mountain region. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the principal responsibility of the Executive Director is the day-to-day operation of the Observatory. Areas of primary leadership and management focus include the supervision of weather observations and report- ing; research and education programs; the museum and library; fiscal and personnel administration (both staff and volunteers); and the development of active membership, fundraising, and marketing programs. In addition, the Executive Director must commit substantial attention to three important projects; the strategic management of a NOAA-supported weather education and outreach program; the creation of the proposed Mount Washington Center—a new facility to accommodate the broad range of Observatory programs, functions, and activities; and assisting the Board of Trustees in organizational transition. The successful candidate must have a strong interest in weather and the natural sciences, along with the history and culture of the White Mountains and northern New England. Advanced training in the natural sciences is not required, but an under- graduate degree and experience in this field is required. Strong visionary leadership and management skills, a working knowl- edge of computer technology and related applications, effectiveness in interpersonal relations and substantial background in fundraising and marketing are essential. A minimum of 3-5 years experience in a non-profit leadership/management capacity is preferred. Salary and fringe ben- efits are negotiable and will be commensurate with experience.
