Two Complications of Trigeminal Injury Occurring in One Patient

Two Complications of Trigeminal Injury Occurring in One Patient Abstract Functional abnormalities of injured cranial nerves present unique and unusual signs and symptoms. One of these, gustatory sweating, frequently occurs after injury to the trigeminal nerve in the parotid area. Neurotrophic changes may occur following section of the sensory root of the fifth cranial nerve for trigeminal neuralgia. A patient who had surgery for sialolithiasis, a mastoidectomy, and trigeminal section, developed unilateral excessive lacrimation, rhinorrhea, and gustatory sweating. Eczematous changes with superficial ulceration occurred over the ala nasi on the side with sensory loss. The etiology and anatomy of the syndromes are discussed. References 1.
