In 1926, Temesváry1 proposed the use of a mixture of pituitary extract and thymus in the first stage of labor. It was claimed that thymus modified the action of the pituitary extract, making the latter safe. Apparently there was the tacit assumption that pituitary extract alone could not be used, because no case reports were given wherein pituitary extract was employed. Since Temesváry's first paper, considerable interest has been shown in thymus-pituitary mixtures, but none of the publications contain any results of the comparative use of pituitary extract and a thymus-pituitary mixture. I proposed to make such a study, using Thymophysin (the trade name of Temesváry's preparation) and a pituitary extract. The composition of Thymophysin has not been made public. The pituitary portion is stated to be "10 international units" per 1.1 cc. The thymus content is not declared. There is some question of the actual strength of the
