Abstract The symptomatic or drug treatment of uncomplicated asthma has become fairly well standardized1-6 and requires knowledge of only about 8 or 10 drugs. In approximately one-third of the asthmatic cases infection is present, and in these the judicious use of antibiotics and other measures is required. These infections are usually secondary invaders on a host made susceptible by allergic edema, and only rarely does a bacterial sensitivity exist. Some of these patients with recurrent asthma due to infection will profit by use of gamma globulin every three to four weeks. Very rarely in the child with the resistant or chronic case or less rarely the case of status asthmaticus may need one of the adrenal steroids to tide them through a severe attack. But all of this does not relieve the physician of the obligation of giving the patient the benefit of a very careful and detailed "work up." References 1.
