Abstract While many monographs have appeared in recent years on the biology of skin, there have been few such publications dealing with the anatomy and physiology of oral mucosa. This new monograph is of excellent quality and should fill a void in this area. A considerable body of research has been published very recently on the structure and function of oral mucosa, and the various contributors have reviewed this research material in preparing their chapters. The contributors are authorities in this area and have all carried out research on oral mucosa. The ultrastructure of oral epithelium is extremely well presented by S. Y. Chen and C. A. Squier, while the lamina propria mucosae and its organization are reviewed by P. Sloan and J. V. Soames of Newcastle, England. The vast literature on fibroblasts and collagen is succinctly but well reviewed by J. C. Daniel.
