Abstract Pat McGrady, personally known to this reviewer, is dedicated to cancer control, and he has interjected himself into this problem not as a scientist but as the science writer that he is. In 29 full and individually rounded chapters, he reports on cancer and cancer research, and he refrains from overinterpretation, although at times his statements broach on oversimplification. There is a good page and subject index, but most regrettably no reference index which (to me) abbreviates the life of the book and its applications. Chapter 9 on smoking is good. The author quotes various workers in proper associations quite accurately and only very rarely does he fail to trail the peripatetic scientists to their current institutions. This reviewer had portions of the book read by an artist and it was favorably received.
