Abstract This text has a difficult role to follow, as a second edition of the "gold standard" text, first issued in 1989. The first edition had 2 volumes and included nearly every reference one could need. Other texts gave good summaries for a quick look, but this text was the one you pulled out when you wanted to really know about a glaucoma problem. The second edition superbly achieves its mission to be "a comprehensive and updated textbook reflecting the knowledge that exists today." (Preface to second edition.) Seventeen new chapters are added, and the book is reorganized into 3 sections; this expansion reflects the rapid growth of knowledge about this disease process. Many chapters are unparalleled for cogency, and this tone is established right away in the preface description of the glaucomas as separate disease processes sharing the common pathway of optic neuropathy. The authors present a new classification scheme http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Archives of Ophthalmology American Medical Association
