The Fail-Safe Fallacy.

The Fail-Safe Fallacy. This article is only available in the PDF format. Download the PDF to view the article, as well as its associated figures and tables. Abstract Some months ago Americans read Fail Safe, a work of fiction presented as some monstrous wave of the future, and were, presumably, appropriately horrified. Not so long before that another book of similar import, On the Beach, played a similar kind of havoc on sensitive natures. Others of the kind have been published and found each its frozen-in-dread audience. So profitable are such productions that nothing short of a total failure of the paper and ink reserves of the world could prevent others, perhaps even more shocking, from pursuing their disorderly and misinforming way through our lives. And those lives are so scrambled that one need break no eggs to make an emotional omelet; they are already broken; one needs only to restir the jaundiced ingredients. It thus comes as high pleasure to recommend this small volume, devoted to decompressing the modern mythology of Pearl Harbor cum Hiroshima.
