THE EFFECT OF PARATHYROID EXTRACT ON MINERAL METABOLISM IN INFANTILE TETANY The activity of parathyroid extract in raising the blood calcium suggests other physiologic effects on metabolism. Collip1 and others, the latest being Hoag, Rivkin, Berliner and Weigele,2 have reported the treatment in cases of infantile tetany and other forms of tetany by the use of parathyroid extract, controlling their studies primarily by the measurement of blood calcium and phosphorus. Hoag and others also present data on calcium and phosphorus metabolism in two cases of infantile tetany. It was our purpose not only to study cases of infantile tetany clinically, but also to note the blood serum calcium and inorganic phosphorus, the electrical reactions and the complete mineral metabolism. METHODS This paper represents a study made in 1925 on two infants admitted to the New Haven Hospital with infantile tetany and rickets.
