Abstract To the Editor.—The customary abbreviations of our specialty, ENT, ORL, ALR, do not take into account the tremendous development of work in the neck and in reconstructive facial plastic surgery among other areas. Even at the most advanced teaching medical centers, members of other services and admitting officers think in terms of an ENT consultation and are frequently confused about which service to consult when head and neck cancer or reconstructive facial surgery is involved. The designation ENT is sometimes mistaken for Entrance. It occurred to me that the addition of the letter Y to ORL might be more descriptive and illuminating. Depending on the emphasis in a practice, the Y represents either the neck or the face or both. The two sternocleidomastoid muscles connecting with the vertical sternum make a Y as does the line of the mandibles with the neck.
