This, the first to be published, covers the cardiovascular system, the upper airways, and the lungs. Although the chapters show considerable variation in approach, all are of generally high quality. The general impact of the work is one of a comprehensive presentation of disease entities, illustrated by their morphological changes and discussed in terms of pathogenesis and clinical correlation. The chapter on the heart is a revision of the late Dr G. Payling Wright's presentation in the first edition and is a superlative memorial to him. The large section on the lungs is one of the finest general discussions of the pathology and abnormal physiology of pulmonary disease available today, barring specialized extended studies. Crawford on arteries, veins, and lymphatics and Porter on hypertension offer well-thought-out presentations.
