Abstract This book is a report of the experiences of the Bellevue Hospital group of New York city in the treatment of syphilis. It is essentially a survey of the results of treatment thus far obtained from the use of antibiotics for the person with syphilis, so that accordingly some of the observations recorded will need confirmation by treatment and observation of larger series of cases. The deductions in regard to the high incidence of reinfections may be influenced somewhat by the fact that the majority of the patients treated in the clinic were Negroes. The defense mechanism of the patient receives little consideration from the author, as he tends to explain the failures of treatment by offering the strain of the organism, the dosage of penicillin and the time factors as the more likely reasons for the unsuccessful results.
