Abstract This book consists of the formal papers, discussions, and recommendations from six workshops presented at a symposium in Nashville, Tenn, in early 1972. The conference was designed to promote comprehensive review and discussion of nutritional composition of solutions, nutritional requirements of patients, toxicological considerations, microbiological and chemical safety, and safety and effectiveness of delivery systems. These purposes were accomplished. Presented from the viewpoint of "the current state of the art," the various presentations are thoroughly done and well deocumented. As one speaker said: "Total parenteral nutrition therapy has passed the interesting but innovative stage of development, and has entered the beginning of a period of logarithmic acceptance and exploitation." Of special interest from the standpoint of nutritional considerations are the chapters on amino acids and protein hydrolysates, calories, nitrogen and disease relationships, and those on carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins and minerals.
