Abstract An understanding of the discipline of surgical pathology is fundamental to the resolution of the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in surgery. The necessity for an accurate appraisal of clinical-pathological correlations for a problem patient is the ideal; its achievement requires a vast experience, critical judgement, and scholarship on the part of those involved. Surgical Pathology, now in its fifth edition, by Drs. Ackerman and Rosai, has given us a standard measure of this accomplishment. It is difficult to conceive of one textbook that better fulfills the need for a ready reference of current information in this field of endeavor. An analysis is presented with the balanced view toward practical, theoretical, and pathophysiological considerations. It includes for discussion every significant neoplastic and non-neoplastic disease encountered in the clinical surgical setting.
