Surgeons View Anesthesia, Viruses, Injuries An Outline of Anesthesia Use for Poor-Risk Patients Use of anesthesia for the poor-risk adult surgical patient depends not so much on the drug or technique used as on adherence to certain basic and fundamental principles which constitute good standard practice under all conditions, according to Forrest E. Leffingwell, MD, Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, Calif. Leffingwell said it was essential to take steps to protect the poor-risk patient from any combined effects of his illness and the anesthesia used. A suggested course of action follows: The marginal-risk patient will survive only if his vital reserves are sufficient to withstand the stress placed on him. These reserves must be carefully assessed and surgery delayed until it can be stated unequivocally that he has been brought to the best physical status possible consistent with the urgency of the situation.Avoid crash inductions of anesthetic agents with rapid build-up of high blood http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png JAMA American Medical Association
