STUDIES OF ACID PRODUCTION

STUDIES OF ACID PRODUCTION Major and minor surgical operations on children are occasionally followed by an alarming increase in acid production, or acidosis, as it is commonly called. "Periodic vomiting of children," as well as many infectious diseases and disorders of the alimentary canal, is accompanied by an increased acid production. Even a casual survey of the literature leads to the impression that certain children are more susceptible to acidosis than others. The aim of the present work is to determine whether this individual susceptibility can be demonstrated experimentally. METHODS Apparently healthly male children between the ages of 4 and 8 years were placed in a metabolism ward under the supervision of a special nurse. The diets were prepared by a special dietitian. The urine at each voiding was separately collected in a jar and its approximate volume noted. It was preserved in a refrigerator after the addition of toluene.
