Abstract
Abstract Progressive spinal muscular atrophy as a late sequel of acute epidemic encephalitis has been described by several authors, but the possibility of its occurrence is not generally acknowledged. The entity is of interest, not only for a more complete understanding of epidemic encephalitis but for its possible etiologic relationship to certain instances of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and chronic progressive anterior poliomyelitis. It is for the latter reason that the following 2 cases are reported. REPORT OF CASES Case 1.— History. —The patient, a Polish-born salesman, aged 50, was first seen in the New York Hospital on May 14, 1940, complaining of immobility of the face, progressive weakness of the left arm and increasing tremor of both upper extremities. About nine months previously, he first noted tremor, weakness and fatigability of the left upper extremity.
