Rhinoliths: Report of a Case Undiagnosed for Ten Years Abstract THE PURPOSE of this paper is to briefly review the history, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of rhinoliths, and to present a recent case of a large, symptomatic rhinolith which remained undiagnosed for ten years. Rhinoliths are relatively rare in the United States. Therefore Van Alyea's statement that the "discovery of a nasal calculus is an unusual and interesting experience"1 is still true. We recently had this experience in our clinic and were prompted to review the recent literature. Surprisingly, there are no reports of rhinoliths in the American ENT literature since 1952. During this same 13-year period, ten cases were reported in other English language journals,2-10 and several were reported in foreign journals. In view of this, it was felt that our case was of sufficient interest to warrant publication. History The first report of a rhinolith was by Bartholin in 1654.
