Abstract Over the past ten years, two technical advances have remarkably increased the productivity of the researcher in the field of thyroid physiology. The use of radioactive iodine and the varied techniques of chromatography have, separately and in combination, provided the means for widespread expansion of the horizons of the thyroidologist. The Ciba Foundation, in Volume 10 of their "Colloquia on Endocrinolgy," has published the transactions of a conference held in June, 1956, under the title "Regulation and Mode of Action of Thyroid Hormones." This conference called together thirty outstanding researchers in various aspects of thyroid physiology and, in a three-day informal conference, witnessed the presentation of a series of nonclinical technical papers, which were followed by extensive and spirited discussion. The edited, verbatim transcript of this conference presents under one cover an accurate picture of the current status of thyroid investigation, with full examination of divergent opinions.
