ANATOMY THE PARATHYROIDS The relative position and histologic anatomy of the parathyroid glands, from early fetal life up to advanced age, have recently been studied by Thimm.1 His material was quite varied: neck organs from over a hundred bodies, mostly adult; material from the eleventh and fifteenth year; some infants under 2 years of age (three prematurely born infants, sixth and seventh month); serial sections of three embryos of 3 cm. length, 5 weeks and 2½ months, respectively, and, finally, a variety of lower animals, laboratory animals, and others from zoological gardens. The work was done under the supervision of Professor Hansemann. Thimm found the anatomic position of the superior pair of parathyroid bodies very constant. The inferior pair, on the contrary, are often pushed laterally, seldom up or down, by swelling of neighboring lymph glands, tumor formation, and the like. In size the bodies measure 2 to 4
