Rebel Without a Cause. After a brief description of the clinical syndrome known as psychopathic personality the author describes in detail the psychoanalysis of a criminal psychopath by means of hypnosis. By hypnoanalysis the writer was able to complete the analysis in forty-six hours. He demonstrated that in this case the criminal behavior of the patient was of a compulsive nature and was caused by anxieties which went back to the time when he was less than 1 year of age. The patient was brought to understand that he was a psychopathic personality, and the reason for his condition was explained to him. He was made to see that he did not have to continue his compulsive criminal behavior. In his summary of the book the author points out that crime is behavior that is motivated not only by social but by intraindividual forces.
