This was especially the case with the excellent vignette on Gunnar Holmgren (Arch otolaryng87:214-218 [Feb] 1968) by Carl-Axel Hamberger, who gives a lively description of the work of the great old man. I would like to make one remark, which is of some importance for the history of audiology and which stresses once more the important pioneer work of Holmgren. The first international course in audiology, September 1950 in Stockholm, was a very great event indeed and the photograph of Fig 4 showing so many VIPs is really remarkable. But it was not the first audiological congress. This was already arranged by Gunnar Holmgren in Stockholm in September 1948. The second one, also under the presidency of Holmgren, was very successful and took place in London, July 1949.
