Radiological Case of the Month

Radiological Case of the Month Abstract A 3800-g female infant was born at term to a diabetic gravida 1, para 0 mother. Findings of physical examination included a round, well-circumscribed, 8X10-cm, freely movable right-midabdominal mass and marked edema of the labia majora. Results of the physical examination were otherwise unremarkable. The infant had no signs of intestinal obstruction and passed normal meconium stools. A plain abdominal roentgenogram (Fig 1) was obtained, and an ultrasonographic scan of the abdomen was performed (Fig 2). Laboratory studies disclosed the following values: α-fetoprotein, 70270 μg/L (70270 ng/mL) (normal cord blood, up to 100 X103 μg/L [100 X103 ng/mL]); hemoglobin, 147 g/L (14.7 g/dL); serum creatinine, 110 μmol/L (1.2 mg/dL); and β-human chorionic gonadotropin, 580 IU/L (58 IU/dL) at 24 hours of age (normal, <50 IU/L [<5 IU/dL]).
