Abstract In 1900 there appeared a publication by Sudeck entitled "Concerning Acute Inflammatory Bone Atrophy."1 During the two following years the same author contributed two other articles under the titles, respectively, "Concerning Acute (Reflex) Bone Atrophy Following Inflammation and Injury to the Extremities and their Clinical Signs"2 and "Concerning Acute (Trophoneurotic) Bone Atrophy Following Inflammation and Trauma of the Extremities."3 Sudeck was particularly impressed by the patchy appearance of the bones in the type of osteoporosis which he described. Of special interest in this regard is the fact that his first article dealt with what he considered to be an inflammatory lesion. Although, in consequence of the ease with which the condition is demonstrated by means of roentgenographic examination, the osteoporotic lesion in the bone is most easily identified, it should, I believe, be borne in mind that the bony change is but one proof of acute atrophy References 1.
