Abstract The early chapters of this book fulfill the purpose intended by the author in teaching the student to understand not only herself but the child and his parents in her relationships with them. The chapter on mental health takes the rather strong position that most mental illnesses stem from experiences suffered in early childhood and that it is extremely important for the nurse to be constantly aware of this fact. Other chapters discuss various procedures for the comfort of the child, safety measures, and special therapies, as well as care of the child in the home and rehabilitation. Growth and development are covered, in addition to the important role the family plays in influencing the child's behavior. There are discussions of the care of the newborn infant and the premature infant and of the various diseases as they affect the body systems, including communicable diseases.
