Diverticula and Diverticulitis of the Intestine
Abstract MECKEL'S diverticulum and the patent omphalomesenteric duct are the consequence of the same defect in embryologic development, differing only in the extent to which the omphalomesenteric duct fails to obliterate. Although Meckel's diverticulum is relatively common, with a frequency of 1 to 2 per cent,1 the patent omphalomesenteric, or vitelline, duct is a rare anomaly. Two patients with complete patency of the omphalomesenteric duct have been treated at the University of Chicago Clinics and were the only patients with this condition in over 30,000 births at the Chicago Lying-In Hospital of the University of Chicago during the past ten years. A review of the literature reveals 128 reported cases. An additional case has been observed elsewhere,2 bringing the total number of cases of patent omphalomesenteric, or vitelline, duct to 131. The most important and serious aspect of this anomaly is the complication of prolapse of the intestine externally References 1.
