Abstract The Ocular Pharmacology Task Force was established in 1968 to investigate and organize this problem-ridden area of medical science. Within two years it has produced a much needed symposium compiling the recent work and thoughts of leading clinicians and basic scientists in perhaps the most ill-understood but critical area in ophthalmology, that of ocular inflammatory disease. The 18 papers and summation presented cover in good detail both clinical and laboratory experience with the standard and the very new corticosteroid, immunosuppressive, antilymphocytic, and nonsteroid anti-inflammatory agents. Areas of particular interest include the relative efficacy and complications encountered with these therapeutic approaches in treating external and intraocular bacterial, viral, and fungal invasions; corneal graft reactions; noninfectious ocular inflammatory disease such as collagen disease, sympathetic ophthalmia, and uveitis of unknown etiology; and of course, the problems of and some solutions to, intraocular pressure rise with various corticosteroid medications.
