Deutsch, MD, Has Been Appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Rush Medical College of Rush University, Chicago, Ill. Dr Deutsch has been a faculty member at Rush since 1984 in the position of program director and since 1994 as professor of ophthalmology. Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB), the world's leading voluntary organization supporting eye research, granted almost $12.4 million to medical schools in the past 18 months. During 1995, more than 650 scientific papers published in 140 professional journals credited RPB with support. Among these are reports of the role of vascular endothelial growth factor in diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, studies of a new chemotherapeutic agent for retinoblastoma, and a possible role for excitotoxicity in glaucoma. The American Academy of Ophthalmology Presented Outstanding Humanitarian Awards to 3 ophthalmologists for volunteer work in needy communities: Suresh R.
