New Rapid TB Test

New Rapid TB Test A novel test for tuberculosis (TB) that can shorten the wait for results from months to less than 2 hours has been endorsed by the World Health Organization (http://tinyurl.com/2fu844s). The fully automated nucleic acid amplification test does not need to be done in a laboratory and can be carried out while the patient waits, an improvement over the century-old standard sputum smear test, which takes up to 3 months to provide results. The test has been assessed rigorously for 18 months in the field for its effectiveness in the early diagnosis of TB, as well as in identifying infection with multidrug-resistant TB and TB complicated by HIV infection (which are more difficult to diagnose). Evidence suggests that using this test could increase by 3-fold the number of patients diagnosed with drug-resistant TB and double the number of those with HIV-associated TB in areas in which these diseases are common. The codeveloper of the test, the Foundation for Innovative and New Diagnostics, negotiated with the test's manufacturer, Cepheid, to achieve a 75% reduction in the current market price for countries most affected by TB. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png JAMA American Medical Association
