MUCIN THERAPY FOR PEPTIC ULCER Fogelson1 reported successful results in the treatment of peptic ulcer with gastric mucin. Kim and Ivy,2 and Fauley3 performed experiments on animals and reported that mucin prevented ulcer formation in dogs with biliary fistulas. Alkalis were found by Kim and Ivy4 to prevent ulcer formation, but the animals did not do well in general. The results of these workers seemed to justify an independent clinical study. Atkinson5 reported that mucin therapy was successful in ulcer-bearing individuals. In the past it has been impracticable to estimate the value of ulcer management because of the difficulty of proper control and the use of subjective evidence. Cases of peptic ulcer present such diverse clinical courses that most of them cannot be used for the purpose of passing judgment in regard to the value of a certain management.
