Abstract THE CONCEPT that cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) may contain products of central nervous system (CNS) disintegration or metabolism was discussed as early as 1910 by Mott1 and later more extensively by Mestrezat.2 The basis for these authors' suggestion was the fact that the lipid content of nervous tissue was high. For this reason the quantitative determination of lipids in the CSF may serve as a diagnostic test in demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). In an earlier publication from this laboratory we have outlined a scheme for the determination of lipids in the CSF and described the normal lipid profile.3 In another report we have described our preliminary findings of alterations in the CSF lipid profile in MS.4 At this time, we present a detailed summary of our findings of the changes in the CSF lipid profile in patients with MS and with retrobulbar neuritis.
