Abstract The first international symposium of hepatology was appropriately held in Chianciano, a world-famous spa, where every year thousands of patients seek relief from their digestive troubles through the multi-mineral spring water emerging from the grounds of Chianciano. The 637-page volume contains the papers and discussions of this symposium, with particular emphasis on cholelithiasis. Despite the international name of this symposium, the authors are practically all Italians. One paper is French and one Spanish. Professors of Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Radiology present their views and experience in the field of gallbladder diseases in twenty-five major papers. Their associates and assistants are the authors of thirty-five short communications on liver disease in general. These communications are partly experimental in nature. A large section of the presented material is devoted to the study of hepatic enzymes, both on biopsy material and in serum. Two papers praise the value of the waters of Chianciano http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Archives of Internal Medicine American Medical Association
