ITALY Cancer of the Rectum and Its Surgical Therapy. —In discussing the paper by Professor Bastianelli at the National Congress of Surgery (J. A. M. A. 146:56 [May 5] 1951) Professor Paolucci, of Rome, reported on about 100 cases of cancer of the rectum treated by him in the past 12 years. Thirty-six of these underwent palliative intervention, while radical surgical intervention was performed in 70 patients. In 1932, at a meeting of Italian surgeons convened to discuss late results of surgery of cancer of the rectum, Professor Paolucci reported on about 30 surgically treated patients. Almost all the patients operated on by perineal approach had died from metastasis or local recurrence of the tumor. Of the patients operated on by abdominoperineal approach, a good percentage survived. He then became convinced that the only truly radical operation giving lasting satisfactory results was abdominoperineal intervention.
